Why Does Noise Exist?
As we approach the end of our first year of publishing, we're reflecting on the purpose of Noise, and our mission for the future.

In early 2024, following the shutdown of UNSW’s original student publication Tharunka, it became clear that the presence of student journalism at UNSW was more critical than ever. The lack of scrutiny on the university from students and legislators alike in previous years had enabled issues ranging from wage theft, staff cuts and the neutering of student representatives at universities across Australia. Clubs continue to fight for funding and engagement while also navigating issues stemming from a post-lockdown environment.
Noise wasn’t founded to solve any of these issues.
Our aim now, as it was then, is to provide transparency on the often opaque systems of the university, and shine a light on the policy changes and decisions that affect students on a day-to-day basis. Our aim is always to be students-first, as we believe that UNSW exists to educate and empower its tens of thousands of students and alumni.
We aren’t here to fix the world, but we are here to make sure that problems don’t go unnoticed or unchallenged. Two decades of weakened student unions have resulted in an erosion of student power, with fewer outlets than ever to voice concerns, share successes, or question decisions that directly impact the university community. From fee hikes to trimesters, these are issues that often go unreported or ignored in mainstream media. Noise isn’t just a publication; it’s a platform for dialogue, reflection, and the pursuit of accountability.
Our editorial approach is straightforward: we aim to be a trusted resource that brings clarity to complicated university processes, policies, and decisions. We dig into topics that others might overlook, and provide context and analysis on the changes taking place around us, whether it’s changes in university governance, new constructions around campus, or the broader societal issues that influence higher education today. We want to give students the tools and information they need to be proactive, informed, and empowered.
By focusing on transparency, we ensure that every student has the chance to understand what’s happening behind the scenes, and why these decisions matter. Whether it’s an article on university administration, a spotlight on student activism, or a deep dive into sustainability efforts on campus, our goal is always to amplify student voices, not just reflect the status quo.
Ultimately, Noise exists because we believe that a well-informed student body is a more empowered one. Education isn't just about what's taught in classrooms, it’s about equipping students with the knowledge and tools to navigate and challenge the systems around them. Through reporting, writing, and conversation, we aim to continue a culture of transparency, engagement, and critical thinking at UNSW.
