Noise Editors Instagram Q&A
How is Noise funded?
So far, Noise has been entirely funded out of pocket by members of the editorial team. All of our editors are volunteers, and our costs for website upkeep and media assets barely break into double digits every month, so at this stage, we can afford to run at a loss for the cause. As part of our commitment to transparency, we are aiming to publish a cost breakdown article later in the year.
This model is unlikely to be sustainable long-term, so we’re also looking at sourcing funding from the university through SSAF, in a manner common with other student publications. We’re avoiding “standard” advertising (such as Google Ads on our website) and paid articles unless no other options are viable, and are committed to not taking funding from unethical sponsors.
How can more students get involved?
If you’re looking at contributing singular articles, you can fill in our tipline form (https://noiseatunsw.com/tipline), or email a document to [email protected]. We’ll look over your article and discuss any potential changes with you, and then publish as part of our weekly schedule.
If you’re interested in contributing to Noise on a regular basis, consider joining our editorial team! The process is as follows:
- Fill in our form and get an invite to our discord and weekly meetings
- Work with one of our editors to publish your first piece (you can either come up with ideas yourself, or pick something from our internal ideas list)
- Once you have two articles published with us, you are officially one of our editors
Note that joining the editorial team is limited to current UNSW students, while general publishing is open to everyone.
If you’re not interested in writing but would like to inform us of a potential story, you can fill in our tipline form (https://noiseatunsw.com/tipline), or email [email protected]. We will reach out to you if we pursue the story.

What's your editorial process like?
Writers are free to pursue stories as they wish and conduct research (often with the help of other team members), or pull from a general list of article concepts. The general process includes reaching out to relevant parties, conducting interviews and collating online sources.
When drafting, writers are encouraged to write their first drafts independently. After the first draft is complete, another editor revises the article and makes suggestions regarding the content, form and style of the piece. The original writer then revises the piece making the relevant changes. Further rounds of revision are performed as required.
All Noise articles are required to be reviewed and approved by at least two members of the editorial team prior to publication to ensure the highest quality of work.
What’s the C&D about?
We were misinformed surrounding a claim made in our March 8th article, 'We Are Noise', and took the article down as soon as we were made aware of this. As a piece published early in the publication’s development, this did not meet the level of accuracy that we aim for in our content. We are in the process of reviewing our production cycle and policies to ensure that this does not occur again.
The Noise Team was unaware of the statements made to Honi Soit. In the interest of the complainant’s privacy, we did not intend to publicise any facet of this, besides clarifying the misunderstanding in our upcoming article updating the state of Tharunka's rebrand. Honi’s statements prompted us to launch an investigation in which we determined the person who leaked our correspondence with the Arc Employee. As such, we have elected to remove this person from our team and are taking measures to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future.
