Motorcycle crash results in first UNSW-wide alert in over 2 years

Around 3pm yesterday, UNSW students received their first text from the SafeZone system since at least 2021, informing them of a "Police operation on Anzac Parade", with "Staff and Students to avoid the area".

The SafeZone system (more commonly known at UNSW Alert) is an opt-out SMS-based system managed by UNSW, which alerts students and staff of major hazards that might affect them. This is the first alert sent to all enrolled numbers since at least 2021.

A text message sent at 3:21pm, stating "UNSW Alert Police operation on Anzac Parade. Light rail and busses suspended. Staff and students to avoid the area. High St light rail open"
This alert was sent to all students and staff who have added their phone numbers to the UNSW SafeZone system.

NSW Police later released information that an individual was involved in a motorcycle crash, which resulted in his death, and the subsequent shutdown of citybound traffic on Anzac Parade for an approximately 4 hour period. This included a 1 hour pause of nearby light rail operations on the L3 line.

We extend our condolences to the victim's friends and family, and urge everyone to exercise road safety over the long weekend. Anyone with further information should contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
